The best of life and the worst of life are encapsulated in our relationships. When we feel in tune with our loved ones, when we feel connected, when we feel supported, we have a sense of well being which permeates every area of our lives. The opposite of this are feelings of rejection, isolation and separation, which lead to anxiety and depression.

We all want to be accepted, appreciated and understood. When these feelings are missing, we become angry and defensive, and our lives become a succession of disagreements and arguments, which seem to compound the problem.

Relationships are our most challenging life lessons. Whether we are talking about parent/child, husband/wife, workmates, or our relationship with ourselves, we need to learn how to understand and accept our needs as well as the needs of others. We need to learn how to communicate in positive and productive ways which will lead us closer to achieving our combined goals. We need to learn how to be separate entities living with other separate entities in respectful and honourable ways.

Not all relationships are fated to last a lifetime, but even in this, there are positive lessons we can learn about ourselves and others which would lead to a happy, productive life.
